Beach of the Week: Phuket, Thailand

Filed under: Asia Travel, Thailand Travel, Travel Tips — admin @ 5:01 pm

Phuket, Thailand is Asia for Visitors’s Beach of the Week.

Several good guides to the Phuket area exist online:

    • AsiaTravel.Com provides a directory of hotels in Phuket.
    • Phuket Web and Phuket DotCom are both excellent overviews of the island.
    • The Phuket Insider Travel Guide provides link to hotels, vacation rentals, restaurants, shopping, and a large number of other topics.
    • Go To Phuket also provides a a number of links on things like hotels, tours, golf on the island, and car rental.
    • Sawadee.com has a good page on Phuket.

I’ll stay away from Patong, the main beach, there in Phuket and visits other beaches if I have choice.

    Grand Palace, Bangkok, Thailand

Filed under: Asia Travel, Thailand Travel — admin @ 5:00 pm

Assuming this is the first time that you visit Bangkok, Thailand than Grand Palace would be on your must-see place to visit.

An area of 60 acres, Bangkok’s Grand Palace covers several government offices, Emerald Buddha Wat (Wat Phra Kaew) and the Royal Residences inside the complex.

    Grand Palace Guard and Elephant 2006 - Thailand - 129 2006 - Thailand - 114 DSC02442

It was King Taksin, a Thai General  (don’t confuse it with Thaksin Shinawatra, the current Thailand PM), that moved the Thai Kingdom Capital from Ayutthaya to Thonburi after Ayutthaya fell to Burmese in 1767.

And it was King Rama I (Thong Duang), the king after King Taksin that moved the capital from Thonburi to Bangkok the current and built the current Grand Palace in 1785.

    Several tips:

    • Proper appearance required to enter the complex. Don’t wear sandals, flip-flop, shorts or tank-top
    • You have to pay 200 baht to enter that entitled you to visit three places: Grand Palace, Vimanmek Palace and Dusit Zoo
    • Thai’s are not required to pay, so if you can pass as Thai, you don’t have to pay.

Traveling by BUS in Bangkok, Thailand

Filed under: Asia Travel, Thailand Travel, Travel Tips — enda @ 12:38 pm

ThailandGuru.com has a very useful page about traveling by BUSES in Bangkok.

    bus_red.jpg busair3.gif busair1.gif busair2.gif busgreen.gif

Among the information he listed the advantages and disadvantages of taking bus in Bangkok:

    Advantages:

    • CHEAP — from 2.5 baht to 25 baht maximum from one edge of town to the other
    • Don’t need to explain to taxi driver where to go; buses go most everywhere
    • Compared to driving, no need to find parking, deal with one-way routes, bad drivers, etc.

    Disadvantages:

    • During rush hour, the buses are crowded with no seating
    • Pollution is bad on the roads waiting for the bus (sometimes heat, too)
    • Need a bus map in English; destinations written on bus are in Thai (some exceptions)
    • Slower than taxis, skytrain, motorcycle taxis, driving
    • Most buses stop service around 10-11pm (last one leaves station to start route at 10pm)
    • If you shop much, then better to carry your bags back via a taxi or your car than on a bus

Complete guide of using bus in Bangkok from ThailandGuru.com:

For more information on routes Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) website, the company that operated buses in Bangkok has an english version pages.

They divided Bangkok Area by 8 Bus Zones, unfortunately there are no maps that accompany this information which could be more useful:

Check out this page to help get more clearer picture of Bangkok Area from Thai Ways Magazine on Maps of Bangkok that’s by far the most useful Bangkok map you can find online.

Some of the Bangkok maps that available online for free on the above page:
